Constipation can be a source of pain and extreme upset in babies, infants and small children making them fretful.
Q. How do you know when baby is constipated?
A. When baby hasn't had a bowel movement for 3 or more days and/or when baby's infrequent bowel movements are hard and dry.
Q. What causes constipation?
A. Changes in diet, dehydration and minor illnesses such as the common cold may be causes. Constipation can also happen when solid foods are introduced into baby's diet whether they are breast or bottle fed.
Q. Do all babies get constipated??
A. It is rarely seen in breastfed babies. But because formula milk is harder to digest than mother's milk is can happen with bottle feeding.
Q. How to get rid of constipation?
A. Solutions:
  • Give baby some cooled boiled water to drink as constipation can be caused by insufficient drinking.
  • Check the formula is being made correctly.
  • A warm bath can often help.
  • So does patting and rubbing the middle back.
  • Place baby in prone position and lightly holding the legs half-bent, gently turn the legs in a cycling motion.
  • Massage baby's tummy in a clockwise direction.
